Last winter/spring, I test drove a lot of cars - and since then, it occurred to me that there are a LOT of great cars out there that I have never experienced. So, I’m creating a ‘bucket list’ of cars that I at least want to experience at some point. And now I am looking for Oppo’s help on what is missing from my list.

Basically, it’s a list of cars that seem like they would be fun on some level - and there’s a bit of a purpose to this, because some time in the next year or two, I intend to buy one of these cars to replace my ‘00 3 series convertible. Needless to say, it’s missing cars that I’ve already driven, but I’m sure it’s missing a lot more - what am I missing? What’s YOUR bucket list?

Camaro SS (current gen - hate the visibility, but still want to drive it)

Mustang GT (current gen)

Fiat 124 Abarth (to see how it’s different from the ND)

ND Miata (the 180 HP version - I’ve driven the current one)

Porsche 996 (Turbo? I’ve driven the 997, the 991 is out of my league)

E90 M3

E46 M3

E39 M5

E34 M5

S2000

STi

Recent Corvette

Aston Martin (pref. V12)

And a bunch of not so recent cars:

C2 Corvette

‘60s land yacht (I’ve owned one, but it’s been a long time)

‘60s muscle car (I always owned the ‘base’ models)

Alfa GTV (105/115 — saw/heard one 5 months ago in California and have been lusting ever since)

BMW 2002tii

R32 GTR (obligatory, I suppose?)

Ferrari - any with a gated manual

British sports car - ideally a big Healey

E30 325is - it’s the only 3 series generation I haven’t driven, and many feel it’s the best

So, whaddaya got?

The Alfa really is a must. Try to drive one thats still got its SPICA in jection in tact. Carbs are not the way that engine in that car was designed, and the SPICA is a marvel.

A stock 40's to 50's truck. (particularly a 48-’50 Ford ) Leaf spring straight front axle, 3 or 4 speed non syncro trans, manual drums, flathead V8, no power steering.

Scout/Bronco/K5 Blazer/Ram Charger

Lightning - both gens

Ram SRT10

Being a pickup enthusiast in the midwest really makes my bucket list of trucks to drive pretty easy because there’s really good odds that someone you know will have what you want to drive, and will be willing to let you drive it. I’ve already driven most of my favorite trucks, squarebody Chevys , dentside Fords, 2nd gen Rams, GMT400's, any Ford from basically 1990-present, same for Chevy’s and Dodge’s, Jeep CJ, YJ, JK, JL. Of course there’s plenty more to drive and I want to try them all.

Cars -  ‘69 Chevelle (dad has one in restoration), 2nd gen Firebird/Camaro, Porsche 944 (especially after having owned a 924), ‘69 Charger, British/Italian roadster, C7 Vette (Z06 or better). I’m sure there’s more but that’s what I can come up with quickly.

Motorcycles - All of them.

If there’s a CarMax near you, you can probably bang out 3 or 4 of new-ish ones in an afternoon.

Also, I know I’m biased, but if you haven’t driven one, a full-fat AMG model would be a good addition to this list. Otherwise, of the ones I’ve owned or driven on here, yes, you should drive them. If it were me I’d add an E34 540i with a manual—just to compare it to  the E34 M5 because the character is quite different. And an older 911.

Good question - not sure really, ideally at least 6-8 or so. This list is really a mixed bag - some cars are really just bucket list items, but much of the list is really about exploring what I want my next ‘fun car’ to be.

There are a bunch of newer cars (mostly at the top of the list) that would be pretty easy to knock off - some of the reason for this post is to motivate myself a bit to make plans and do it.

That *seems* like it would be one of the harder ones to get access to.  Mostly because I don’t know any Alfa nuts, and they’re not easy to find.

Yeah - part of my purpose here is to re-motivate myself. I test drove a LOT of cars back in the winter/early spring, and got a little burned out from dealing with sales people on the drives. So I plan to re-start that soon, possibly at CarMax or at dealers on their slow days (and being clear on what I’m doing - this is ‘shopping’ but not near term for me).

The reason AMG isn’t on the list is because I drove a 2013 E63 sedan while I was shopping - and ended up buying a 2014 E550 sedan. Someday, I’ll add the W213 E63 to this list, but it’s way out of my price range right now.

You’re right about the older 911- I’ve driven the 997 and loved it, and am curious about the 996 because they’re cheaper, and I don’t mind the fried eggs that much.  The 993 won’t go on the list because $$$$, but I really need to add an older air-cooled 911 to the list.  And good point on the older 540i, too - if I can find a manual.

Totally agree on the pickups being accessible. I’ve driven most of them over the years, but not really in the last 10 or so. You should add a 454 Suburban to that list, if you haven’t driven it already. I’m a huge fan of the square body Suburbans, and square bodies in general - they’re nice, comfortable, and are pretty much the ‘ideal’ pickup to me.

And that 40s/50s pickup is something my dad lusts after - though he’s old enough now that he would really need the power assisted accessories.  They’re cool trucks.

They aren’t as bad as people like to say they are, the stock diff soaks up a lot of it.

Even my built V6 versions don’t have much torque steer.

The ‘Ring would be perfect! I haven’t seen Rustholes are Weight Reduction lately - he has a small fleet of Chevies, just 1 year newer than that ‘59, and he’s in your neck of the woods somewhere (Germany or Netherlands, I think?)

And yes, there were a LOT of 2-speed automatics put into American cars on the 50's and 60s.  Hell, the Dynaflow that Buick used up until 1963 or so was arguably a ONE-SPEED (it had two gears but did not shift between them if that makes sense).

Kinja'd!!! WilliamsSW > Long_Voyager, Now With More Caravanny Goodness
10/08/2018 at 17:13

Kinja'd!!!1

That’s pretty good then - some manufacturers did a better job getting rid of torque steer than others.  My ‘90 Sunbird Turbo with a 5-speed was a handful in 1st gear.

454 Suburban absolutely should be on the list, along with the 454SS, not sure how I forgot that one. I’ve only ever driven a 305 powered Squarebody which was slow, but still fun. More power can only be better. I want to try the 6.2 Diesel as well, I’ve driven a 6.5 Non-Turbo so I’m curious what the 6.2 is like.

I actually have a ‘50 Ford F3 that I want to get built, I’m keeping some of the traditional feel to it by keeping the leaf sprung straight axle in the front, but will likely put a syncronised transmission in it, along with a more modern engine, and power assisted discs.

Now that I think on it, I’m not sure that I’ve driven a big block anything, so that has to happen. (Also a V10 Dodge, I’ve driven a V10 Super Duty).

I think a lot of it has to do with the diff layout. The C hryslers do a good job of locking the diff, so they usually send equal power both directions.

Yeah, I keep forgetting that they offer the same engine (albeit detuned a bit) in the C-Class.

My ‘14 E550 has all the power I need (and hell, I could tune it for 100+ more HP for a few grand if I needed to) - it just doesn’t have the suspension tuning that the newer AMG’s have.

E550s are awesome, especially the coupes. One of the most clean and confident donuts I’ve ever done (not that I’ve done many) was in one that my friend owned. Such a smooth engine, and the paddles are decent enough to have fun with. If you’re ever looking for another benz, I work for a dealer, so if you want give me a shout for any help or questions you might have. That generation E Class will probably end up feeling how I feel about my E34 now in about 20 years. Silently one of the best cars out there for this generation with a timeless design and extremely balanced chassis

Thanks! This is my first Benz- I bought it 4.5 months ago, it’s a CPO car, and so far I love it! My wife does, too - which is awesome, because she was pretty set against buying used at the outset.

It’s also a sedan, so it’s 4Matic, because we have a 2 year old. And yeah, the W212 is quietly a pretty great car - the bugaboos from the W210 era are long gone.
